I didn’t start asking real questions until my mid-20s.
Not because I had never wondered. But because I had always been rewarded for not wondering too much.
Growing up, I was the good kid. The one who knew the verses, avoided the “bad influences,” and could be trusted to “stand firm” in a world full of compromise. Adults praised me for my conviction. My youth leaders told me I’d be a pastor one day. My identity was tightly wrapped in the belief that obedience was virtue.
And the thing about being the good kid is…
You’re not allowed to stop being him.
Not without disappointing everyone who saw you as “the example.”
